Basic Operations with Integers

The basic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of integers have specific steps to follow when being calculated. Instead of memorizing and applying all these steps, one way in which to calculate these is by use of a number line, as shown below.

Steps to using the number line to Add or Subtract:
1. Rewrite your problem to be only Sign, Number, Sign, Number
2. Place your pencil on the the first number in your problem
3. Move to the left (if second number is negative) the amount of spaces that number says, or
move to the right (if the second number is positive) the amount of spaces that number says.

(+3 implies moving 3 times to the right.)
(+2 implies moving 2 times to the right.)
(-3 implies moving 3 times to the left.)
(-5 implies moving 5 times to the left.)
