Science

We develop students science skills by giving them the opportunity to investigate important issues in the world around them. Inquiry-based units promotes the development of effective problem solving using a four-step plan.

Students will:

  • THINK (gain full understanding of the problem.)

  • PLAN (decide what steps to solve the problem.)

  • DO: (carry out their plan and test results.)

  • SHARE: (communicate the solution to others.)

Inquiry-based units reach students at all grade levels. These units include diversified topics such as a second grade unit on the Monarch Butterfly and a fifth grade unit on the American Red Cross basic water safety instruction.

Our science curriculum is guided by the standards set by the New York State Education Department.  Students are asked to demonstrate many skills including classifying, interpreting data, manipulating materials and making observations.  In the lab setting, students are encouraged to work cooperatively in groups while developing their problem-solving skills. These skills help to foster the development of a positive attitude.
