Extra-Curricular Activities from 3-4 PM

Kennedy Elementary School is starting something new this year.
Students in grades 3 through 6 can elect to participate in a
variety of activities provided they return their permission forms
each month.

Miler‛s Club – Students in grades 3 through 6 are encouraged to
log their miles as they walk or jog around Kennedy School‛s ¼ mile
track. The club meets throughout the month. Check the monthly
Activity Calendar. Several teachers are offering this exercise.
Yoga – “Yoga for Kids” is presented using songs, storytelling,
props and games. Children will have fun while learning that a
regular yoga practice is beneficial in relieving stress, balancing
the body‛s energy, increasing concentration and building self
confidence.

Math Counts – MATHCOUNTS problems will challenge and inspire
children to develop problem solving and critical thinking skills.
Homework Helper – Several teachers are offering their
assistance after school to give students a chance to complete
their homework with an adult. Check the calendar to see when
you would like to get this help.

Student Council – Classmates within each homeroom elect
Student Council members. Throughout the school year Student
Council members coordinate and plan many school-wide activities
to serve our community, neighboring communities and our Kennedy
School family. The students will meet after school on the first
Monday of every month and also during the school day throughout
the year.

School Store – The students order the items to be sold in the
school store, take turns selling, counting and rolling the coins and
even writing the checks to pay our bills. Our goal is to build
discipline, responsibility, and dependability into their daily lives.
Math Enrichment- Mrs. Green will be working with 3 and 4 th
graders to enrich their math skills. Join her to give your brain a
real numbers workout.

A Quiet Spot to Read – The Kennedy Library offers students a
“quiet spot to read.” They are required to bring (or choose)
enough material to read for at least 15 minutes. Students fill out
a slip, which is signed by the library staff, to present to their
teacher. The time spent reading here, can be applied toward
their Boomerang Reading goal. This year Mr. Uebler is also
offering “Battle of the Books” for students wishing to
participate.

Boomerang Reading Program – The Boomerang Reading Program is
a motivational reading program, designed to strengthen each
student‛s reading ability, while fostering the home-school
connection. It is very simple. Like a boomerang that is thrown and
returns to the sender, students will be given a Boomerang Reading
Folder to bring home and return the next day. Parents and
students are asked to read together fifteen minutes each night.
Parents sign the Boomerang Reading Sheet before the students
return the folder the following day.

Advantage After-School Program – This is a grant funded afterschool
program that is run Monday – Friday from 2:50 to 6:00 PM.
Activities include computer lab, library, recreation, individual
tutoring and homework help, as well as other scheduled activities,
such as special presentations.

Odyssey of the Mind- The Ogdensburg City School District
offers Odyssey of the Mind as a school-wide enrichment program
for students in grade kindergarten through twelve. This is an
after-school program that encourages creative problem solving
and enhances higher level thinking skills. Teams of five to seven
children compete at a regional competition each spring. First
place teams then advance to the New York State Odyssey of the
Mind Competition and the state champions advance to World
Finals held at large universities throughout the United States.
Volunteers, including parents, teachers and community leaders
coach the teams and serve as judges at the various competitions.
Odyssey of the Mind is an international program.

Memory Book Club- The sixth graders work with Mrs. Scaggs
and Mrs. McGill to create a yearbook of memories for all
students who wish to purchase one. The students combine their
photography skills with computer programs to enhance this
yearbook.
