Purpose:

The Ogdensburg City School District and the Ogdensburg Free Academy High School Social Studies Department in accordance with the Ogdensburg City School District Graduation Standards, and the New York State Learning Standards, are creating a Senior Service Project component to the Participation in Government and Economics 12 courses.  This would be an alternative assessment that would give the student “real world” experiences that could possibly encourage lifelong interest in volunteering and community service.  The required series of outlined activities in this proposal will address a need for student volunteerism in their community as well as provide students knowledge of careers in the community service field.  To achieve that end, the proposed Senior Service Project that will hopefully be implemented during the 2007-2008 school year.

  Procedures:

  The student will:

  • be required, as a portion of their overall Participation in Government or Economics 12 course grade, to  complete a Senior Service Project. [see Senior Service Project Grading]
  • be required to select a variety of projects or placements from lists titled Governmental Systems and Community Services. [see Senior Service Project Options]
  • be required to have prior teacher approval of any choice undertaken for the Senior Service Project that doesn’t appear on the Senior Service Project Options Form. [see Senior Service Project Verification Form]
  • be required to have a signature on a Verification Form from a representative of the Governmental System or Community Service institution in order to satisfy part of the Senior Service Project requirements. [see Senior Service Project Verification Form and Senior Service Project Requirements]
  • satisfactorily complete the requirements stated in the Senior Service Project Options in order to receive credit for the Senior Service Project. [see Senior Service Project Grading and Senior Service Project Options]
  • lose credit for the project if he/she is found to be plagiarizing or fabricating their work in any way or form.

  Vounteering for an approved Political Campaign [see teacher for details]	Any Community Service Organization that is pre-approved by the teacher and has the organizations consent
  Any Governmental System meeting that is pre-approved by the teacher and has the governing bodies consent.

  Senior Service Project: Requirements:

  The student will:

  • be required to make selections from lists of Governmental Systems and Community Services in order to develop a better understanding of civic responsibility.
  • be required to successfully complete the Senior Service Project Community Service Verification Form and Senior Service Project Public Meeting Verification Form by having an official of the institution or organization sign the form[s].
  • be required to give written responses the questions that are part of the Senior Service Project Community Service Verification Form and Senior Service Project Public Meeting Verification Form.  These responses should address all aspects of the task and be a minimum of one typed, double-spaced page with no more than a 12-point font with default margins (1”).

  Senior Service Project: Grading:

  The student’s grade will be determined by a series of criteria:

  • The grade will make up 20% of the overall grade in the Spring Semester Government 12 or Economics 12 courses.  The three marking period averages of the second semester will each count 1/5 [20%], the Final Exam will count 1/5 [20%], and the Senior Service Project will count 1/5 [20%].
  • The Senior Service Project will be started during the second marking period in early October and the DEADLINE FOR COMPLETION IS JUNE 1ST.
  • The student will assessed using a checklist during their second semester Government 12 or Economics 12 class, which will be verified by their teacher to determine if all or some of the components were completed.
  • The student may turn in their completed project materials, PRIOR TO THE DEADLINE, including all forms and written components to their 12th Grade Social Studies Teacher.

  The OFA High School Government 12 and Economics 12 teachers are looking forward to having our students interact with the community and learn a valuable lesson in community service and volunteerism. We appreciate any suggestions you may have regarding our Senior Service Project.

  If you are a member, or are associated with any Governmental System [see under options] or any agency or group that provides Community Services [see under options] we would appreciate hearing from you or your group. We couldn't possibly name all organizations, and regret if we overlooked any of which you may be associated. We are looking for any proposal that would fit into the criteria of the project. Please feel free to use the Senior Service Project/Public Meeting Suggestion Form as a way of giving us an understanding of what it is that your group would like to have the student's pursue.
