The students in Mr. Merna's Latin American Studies class participate in early June of each school year in a Model Organization of American States Conference at SUNY Plattsburgh. The students research a different country in Latin America each year and represent that nation at the conference. In order to gain first hand knowledge for their research, Mr. Merna arranges for the students to travel to Ottawa, Ontario and visit the embassy of the nation they are representing. Students use this research to develop resolutions on varying topics under discussion by the actual Organization of American States.
Students may take Latin American Studies in lieu of Participation in Government for graduation credit. They may also receive college credit through SUNY Plattsburgh.
